On the 20th of September 2024, the GAPRIA research team successfully held an International Conference entitled ‘Contentious Politics in European Urban Setting and the Right to the City’, at the Historical Archive of the University of Athens.

The interdisciplinary conference, which constituted one of the most important outreach and networking actions of the GAPRIA project, aimed to bring together research on the politics of urban life which centre and shed new light upon questions of spatial and social justice, and develop comparative and collaborative work in this area.

The conference further aimed to share experiences and research evidence from various, mostly southern European settings and the Mediterranean, and thus enhance research on gentrification, displacement and eviction in this geographical region.

Finally, it aimed to increase the networking among researchers on space, place, justice and culture, and promote their work, as well as share research outcomes with the broader public.

The conference had presentations from a variety of European contexts such as Barcelona, Athens, Milan, Cyprus and Rome while it touched on a variety of research areas relating to urban life such as graffiti and street art, Airbnb and touristification, criminalization of squats and marginalized urban dwelling, memory and its role in resistance to, and coping with, processes of urban regeneration, intersectionality, resistance and urbanity, and many more.

The conference ended with a networking dinner that gave the chance among participants to get to know each other better and potentially form collaborations in the future.

The GAPRIA team would like to express its gratitude to all panellists and panel chairs, as well as to the wider public that attended the event.
